How to optimize iPhone (iOS devices)
Every new version of iOS comes equipped with a bunch of settings and configurable options
that get buried away within the system. Some of these settings are extremely important, whereas others are not that important and tend to slow your device at some point. So let us see some ways in which you can optimize your iOS device
Disable Transparency & Motion
Some devices seem to struggle to render visual effects on iOS 9, by disabling transparency and
motion eye candy, you can speed up the general interactivity of iOS on any iPhone, IPad, or iPod touch.
Open the “Settings” app in iOS and go to
“General”
Choose “Accessibility”
Locate “Increase Contrast” and choose
“Reduce Transparency”, toggling that to the
ON position
Go back to Accessibility and now locate
“Reduce Motion”, toggle that to the ON
position as well
Exit out of Settings and explore around iOS to immediately feel the difference in speed
Disable Background App Refresh
Background App Refresh is an interesting feature that allows background app activity in iOS, but while it’s well intentioned it can lead to a decrease in device performance. Turning it off is easy, and the only side effect is that when you open an app that gets details from the internet, it refreshes on open rather than in the background – no big deal.
Device owners can choose to enable or disable
Background App Refresh by heading to Settings
> General > Background App Refresh.
You can also disable individual apps rather than disabling all apps. You can keep enable for important apps.
Siri Suggestions
Siri has become ever more intelligent and capable as part of the iOS 9 refresh. That also means that Siri has become more power hungry and requires additional system resources as part of the assistant’s deeper integration into iOS. Siri Suggestions suggests apps, people, locations, and a lot more when you search. This is even offered up before you start typing. This feature can be great for modern devices, but can cause issues for certain hardware.
To disable Siri Suggestions navigate to Settings > General > Spotlight Search , and toggle the
Siri Suggestions switch OFF.
If you wish to leave it on, iOS provides the ability to remove apps from the search results.
Use Low Power Mode
Apple’s Low Power Mode is unique to iOS 9 and is pretty much provided for this exact
issue. iOS will automatically ask if you want to enable Low Power Mode when the battery reaches a critical level. This is around the 20% mark. However, if you’re experiencing battery problems and want to significantly reduce the power usage of the device then it’s possible to manually enter Low Power Mode from within the Settings app.
Launch the Settings app, navigate to Battery and turn the Low Power Mode toggle to the “On” position.
Keep in mind that certain features and functionality are put into a
restricted position when Low Power Mode is active.
Control Location Services
Location services can be extremely useful when interacting with apps and software designed to provide functionality based on a GPS position of the device. However, as you might expect, constantly tracking the location of the device and polling the GPS radio can be extremely taxing on the device’s battery. If you’re experiencing battery related issues, then
turning Location Services off could be the answer.
Launch the Settings app, navigate to Privacy ,
then select the Location Services option. It
then can then be toggled on or off at will.
Additionally, you can also switch off Location Services individually for apps you don’t use that often.
Turn Off Wifi or Mobile Data when not in use
When the phone is not in use and is still connected to a Wifi or Mobile Data is on, then the battery will drain because an individual app will try to connect to internet even if there is no new notification. So as to save battery and optimize the device, turn off Wifi or Mobile data when not in use.
Clean Installation of iOS Using iTunes
Restoring a device is generally considered one of the last resorts when it comes to attempting to resolve performance issues that are being experienced after a new version of iOS has been installed. However, it’s been found in the past that updating to the latest version of iOS via Apple’s OTA update mechanism can sometimes cause issues.Connecting the device to iTunes and restoring it will provide a fresh installation of Apple’s latest mobile operating system. Make sure to create a full backup of your data prior to doing this as everything will be wiped.
